College Counseling Services

In addition to an Academic Advisor, every KCPS student is assigned a College Counselor. While Academic Advisors help students with their academic progress, College Counselors support students in achieving their individual college-related goals through a highly personalized and ongoing guidance process in which the student and parent are intricately involved.

The program begins with the Counselor, student, and parent(s)/guardian(s) meeting to determine objectives. Counselors can assist KCPS students find and select appropriate colleges or universities based on specific goals, while considering each student's academic performance, financial circumstance, social activities, volunteer efforts, special talents, and learning abilities.

Because every student is unique, each student has an individual plan that is reviewed and adjusted regularly. To create this plan, Counselors evaluate student transcripts and coursework, family and student goals, special skills, and academic and extracurricular strengths and weaknesses. Counselors also assist with specialized programs, awards, and applying for scholarships for students with special talents, such as athletes and performing artists.

Once a plan is set and agreed upon by all involved, Counselors can suggest community service and internship programs, as well as provide guidance with college applications and admissions, student portfolios, references, essay writing, and interviewing techniques.
