Spanish I

Description:
In this course, students will achieve proficiency in basic Spanish spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation with the goal of engaging in simple conversations, writing in Spanish and understanding Spanish dialogue. Special voice board activities encourage conversation practice. Students also learn the history and culture of Latinos.

Spanish II

Description:
This course is designed for students who have successfully completed Spanish I or its equivalent. The purpose of this course is to enable students to enhance proficiency in Spanish by developing linguistic, communicative, and cultural knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. Vocabulary development in a wide variety of topics is an integral part of this course as students examine various types of folklore and traditions. This course places emphasis on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Throughout the curriculum, students express feelings, ideas, and opinions in Spanish and comprehend spoken and written Spanish.

Spanish III

Description:
Spanish III has been carefully designed to meet the standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These standards call for a method of teaching that focuses on successful communication through speaking, writing, reading, and listening, as well as a thorough grounding in aspects of culture. Unit activities blend different forms of communication and culture to ensure that students meet all standards. Course strategies include warm-up activities, vocabulary study, reading, threaded discussions, multimedia presentations, self-checks, practice activities and games, oral and written assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams. Learning activities in each unit are focused on a specific theme.

French I

Description:
For students beginning their study of the French language, this course will teach them how to greet people, describe family and friends, talk about hobbies, and communicate about other topics, such as sports, travel, and medicine. Each lesson presents vocabulary, grammar, and cultural items in context, followed by explanations and exercises. Vocabulary includes school subjects, parts of the body, words to describe people, and idiomatic phrases. Language structure includes the verb system, adjective agreement, formal and informal address, reflexive verbs, and past tense. Students will also gain an understanding about the cultures of French-speaking countries and regions within and outside Europe. The curriculum is balanced between thematic and communicative approaches to language learning. The content is based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards, addressing the 5 C's of the ACTFL standards: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.

French II

Description:
The French II course further develops the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. At this level, students learn to communicate with more confidence about topics that are linguistically more complex. Each module presents vocabulary, grammar, and culture in context. Vocabulary includes culinary, geographical, environmental, and architectural terminology. Language structure includes present, past, and future tenses; idiomatic expressions; impersonal constructions; and reported speech. To further connect to the French- speaking world, students use hypermedia to view supplementary materials. A variety of learning strategies provides students with the tools to achieve proficiency in the French language and cultural understanding.
