KCPS General Information:
Mission:
Kaplan College Preparatory School prepares high school students from around the world for academic excellence and success in their personal goals through a rigorous college preparatory online curriculum enhanced by superior individualized outreach instruction and support for independent learning. KCPS harnesses the power of a flexible learning environment and modern educational technology to serve students who seek more than a traditional college preparatory school.
Philosophy:
We believe that students should be active learners who have real choices regarding their learning environments. We believe that all students should have the opportunity to take an online course and utilize today's technology to prepare for the future.
KCPS Instructional Model:
KCPS students benefit from one-on-one online instruction designed to cater to individualized student learning needs and patterns. KCPS online Instructors provide instructional support via email, instant messenger, telephone, asynchronous threaded discussions, and synchronous whiteboard communications. Through the use of these varied online pedagogical techniques, all KCPS students can be actively engaged in their learning and educational process.
Accreditation:
KCPS is a school operated by Kaplan Virtual Education, which is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA).
SACS is one of only six regional accrediting organizations in the U.S. recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and it accredits more than 13,000 public and private schools in 11 states of the Southeastern U.S. and in Latin America. Member institutions perform comprehensive self-evaluations to assist them in planning for improvement and to ensure the public of their overall quality.
CITA is comprised of seven premier American educational accrediting agencies, and it accredits more than 32,000 public and private educational institutions in 100 countries. CITA Standards for distance learning institutions promote quality schools and continuous improvement to enhance student success.
This recognized accreditation means that KCPS maintains consistency and standards in education that are upheld by peer institutions. While each school maintains its own policies regarding transfer credits, SACS and CITA promote the acceptance of credits from fellow accredited schools. Therefore, KCPS credits are regularly accepted at other high schools.

Warning:
KCPS strongly discourages the use of the following programs:
Kazaa/Kazaa Lite, Morpheus, AOL/AOL Instant Messenger, LimeWire/LimeShare, Bear Share, Galaxy, iMesh, Grokster, NeoNapster/Napster, Down Load Ware, Del Fin Media Viewer, WinMX, Gozilla, and all other file sharing programs.
Students are fully responsible for removing file sharing programs and correcting any effects caused by these programs. Use of such programs in violation of the intellectual property rights of others is a violation of KCPS Acceptable Use Policy and may violate the laws of the United States, subjecting student to removal from KCPS course(s), as well as other disciplinary or legal action more fully described in the Internet Acceptable Use Policy, and/or applicable laws.
Failure to remove these programs may result in the inability to access courses and complete assignments. KCPS will provide directions regarding the removal of file sharing programs which may interfere with course access. Despite the presence of any technological problems, students are expected to maintain their pace in all of their courses and are therefore responsible for seeking alternative methods of accessing their courses if necessary. Time extensions will not be granted.
Internet Acceptable Use Policy:
Internet access is required for students taking KCPS courses. Internet access offers valuable, diverse, and unique resources to both students and Instructors. Access must be used in a responsible, safe, efficient, ethical, and legal manner.
With access to computers and people from around the world also comes the availability of material that may not be considered to be of educational value in the context of the school setting. Families should be warned that some material available on the Internet may contain items that are potentially illegal, defamatory, inaccurate, or offensive. On a global network it is impossible to control all materials, and an industrious user may discover controversial information, either by accident or deliberately.
KCPS DOES NOT WARRANT, AND SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS, ALL WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR NON-INFRINGEMENT, RELATING TO THE USE OF, AND/OR MATERIALS OBTAINED VIA, THE INTERNET.
The disclaimer includes direct, incidental, consequential, indirect, or punitive damages arising from Internet use.
Nevertheless, KCPS firmly believes that the benefits to students from access to the Internet, when consistent with the KCPS' goals and objectives, far outweigh the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with our educational goals.
Access to the Internet is a privilege, not a right. That access entails responsibility. The smooth operation of the school network depends upon the proper conduct of the students and faculty, who must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidelines are provided here so that students are aware of the responsibilities they are about to acquire.
Please take a moment and read the information at the following link concerning other Internet responsibilities: http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html.
Rules of Netiquette:
Do not use obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar, rude, threatening, or disrespectful language, and do not use a computer in a way that lacks consideration and respect. These actions not only violate the school's policy, but may violate laws in the United States.
Do not cut, copy, or plagiarize Internet content, and always properly acknowledge the source of materials in accordance with the KCPS plagiarism policy.
Do not violate the terms and conditions of the websites you access.
Do not violate any intellectual property rights of others, including, for example, the copyrights and trademarks of others. Never transmit or publish any information, software, or content that violates or infringes on the rights of others.
Always report any security problems or vulnerabilities in the school's computers, network, or Internet connection to a system administrator.
Do not violate the privacy of others and never view files that were not intended for your use.
Do not create harmful computer viruses and never transmit or publish any information, software, or content that is or that you suspect will be harmful. These actions not only violate the school policy, but may violate penal laws in the United States.
Do not give out personal information-including your full name (first names are best), home phone number, home address, email address, or other data-anywhere on the Internet.
Always write down any error message that appears when you are working with any application and report it to a system administrator.
Do not use email to transmit private information such as credit card numbers or Social Security numbers. Email messages can easily be intercepted and viewed.
Do not reply to email messages from strangers asking you for personal information, attempting to arrange meetings, or engaging in personal contact. Always report any message you receive that is inappropriate or that makes you feel uncomfortable to your Instructor or another school employee.
Always protect your password-do not share your password or use anyone else's.
Do not use email with your online classmates for anything other than course-related communications.
Do not hack into others' systems; do not send spam or unwanted/unsolicited email.
Users are subject to all local, state, and federal laws and agree to abide by all such laws. School administrators will cooperate fully with local, state, or federal officials in any investigation related to any illegal activities conducted through Internet access. In the event there is a claim that you have violated this policy, you will be provided with notice of the suspected violation and have an opportunity to present an explanation, unless law enforcement officials direct us otherwise. Within the first 10 business days of a student's enrollment in a KCPS course, a parent or affiliate may request to have the student drop the course without penalty. Refunds will be issued within 60 days of the drop or withdrawal request. After the 10-day grace period, refunds will be calculated based on a prorated amount of total tuition cost per course over the course duration period based on the last documented date of the drop or withdrawal request from a parent or affiliate representative.
Course duration is equal to 40 weeks or 20 weeks. An administrative charge of $150 per course will be applied to courses dropped after two weeks (10 business days) of the course duration period. The nonrefundable tuition deposit of $350 will be deducted from the refund total.

An administrative charge of $150 per course will be applied to honors-to-regular course changes after the 20-day grace period. All course change requests will be reviewed and approved by the KCPS Academic Advisor. Honors courses are only available to a student at the beginning of a full-credit course, unless the first half credit of the course has been issued as Honors.
KCPS Billing Policy:
A contract will be issued to parents/guardians of KCPS students upon enrollment. Contracts will be mailed electronically and in paper format. Parents/guardians are required to sign and return the contract, and contact the Business Office for payment arrangements within 7 business days from the date of contract. Contract will be dated with the date of enrollment. The Business Office will make one attempt to contact parents/guardians after the seventh business day. If this attempt is unsuccessful, the student will be removed from the courses and the parent/guardian must submit an appeal and payment to the Business Office before the student will be reinstated.
Late Payment Policy:
Student accounts that are late more than 5 business days will be flagged for collection by the Business Office. AP Courses are only available in the full-service program. Deadlines to register for these courses are from August 1 through November 1. Late registration will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Registration for the AP exam will be provided by the Academic Advisor for students enrolled in AP courses in KCPS.
Pace Notification Timeline:
Students are responsible for accessing pace charts when they begin each of their courses. Pace charts are provided by Instructors through each respective course. Pace charts specify the expected assignments that should be submitted in an appropriate time period to complete the course in the time allotted. Students that do not submit the required assignments within the first three weeks of being enrolled in the course will be referred to the Academic Advisor for a conference. These students will be considered to be two weeks behind pace.
- An email notification will be sent to guardians and students if the student falls five weeks behind pace at anytime during the course. Instructions for pace recovery will be included in the email and immediate contact with the Academic Advisor will be requested.
- A zero grade warning will be sent if the student is more than five weeks behind, when twelve weeks from course end date. The student will begin to receive zeros for work not submitted based on the pace recovery plan.
- The student will be referred to the Academic Advisor for a conference if there is no response after one week of inputting zeros.
High Touch Communication (Full-Time Students Only):
All KCPS students are required to initiate one high-touch communication with EACH of their online Instructors during the Instructor's office hours on a weekly basis. All students must be prepared to work offline if the Internet is not available at the travel destination. All students are expected to maintain daily, disciplined study schedules while traveling. A two-week vacation is built into all of the 40-week pace charts and one-week vacation into all 20-week pace charts. The student has the flexibility to decide when this vacation will be taken. However, it is the responsibility of the student to notify each of their
Instructors of this vacation time.

All students will take a final exam at the end of the course.
Administrative Drop:
If the student does no work in a course within 21 days and does not contact their Instructor, they will be administratively dropped from the course with a financial penalty of $150 (per course).
If a student drops the course after completing 50% of the class requirements and fails to take the midterm final exam, the online Instructor can issue an "F" as a final grade. This grade may be reversed if the Principal receives and approves a written appeal from the student's parent within 30 days of the final grade being issued. A half credit may be assigned to replace the "F" if the Principal grants the appeal.
Academic Honesty Policy/Administrative Honor Code and Plagiarism Policy:
Every KCPS student is required to understand and abide by the following policies.
As members of the KCPS community, all students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and academic integrity. All students will follow appropriate citation guidelines to ensure that proper credit is given to the authors or creators of any work used. - Submit an essay written in whole or in part by another student as if it were one's own
